Day 1 (30/31 October 2012)
Tony and I manage to dose a bit on the plane and half way through the flight I pull up the blind to see the most wonderful view of the Himalayas without a cloud insight! Everyone else on the plane seems to be sleeping and totally unaware of what they are missing. After gazing at the view for a while I reluctantly pull the blind back as I am afraid of waking everyone - but I do wish I could watch for a bit longer.
Bangkok airport is very new and extremely grand - long marble corridors and miles to walk through immigration and then baggage control. After the rather rarified atmosphere of these huge halls it is quite a shock when we reach the 'other side'. There is no air conditioning for a start and there are literally hundreds of people holding up boards but sadly none with Power on it. We wander around for about half an hour getting rather hot and bothered and then just as we are beginning to lose heart a pretty, tiny young girl walks past us holding our name on a piece of white card. We are so relieved and she is full of apologies. It takes about an hour to drive to our hotel along toll motorways with 6 lanes. The traffic is very heavy and what we can see of the city seems to consist of huge concrete skyscrapers. Our guest house is quite simple on six floors. We are pleasantly surprised though as we have a top floor room with balcony over looking the Chaya Pharo river.
After a swim in the pool we go to Hemlock a restaurant opposite recommended in Lonely Planet. The food is good but service really slow and by the end we are really looking forward to our beds.
